SINGER songwriter Shameem has released a new album, Second City.

The Western Australian’s music is an eclectic mix of jazz, blues and socially conscious lyrics.

“One of the overall themes that run through my songs is my desire to tell people to become more socially conscious,” she said.

“I want them to think about the state of the world, and how they can do their own little bit to improve it.”

One of the best ways to improve the world, according to Shameem, “is to break down barriers of prejudice, or differences between people, because if we work together we are much more likely to better the world.

“If we can’t achieve that, then we can’t achieve anything.”

In Under One Sun, the first single of the new album, “I am talking about how we all live in the same planet and receive the light from the same sun.

“If we are all the same and coming from the same place, why do we treat some people better than others?

“To me it’s very apparent that the cause of many problems in the world in inequality,” she said.

With a strong soul influence and a unique jazz sensibility, Under One Sun was co-written with Grammy-winning UK-based producer, James Bryan (Nelly Furtardo, Olly Murs, James Morrison).

The Second City LP was co-produced with Rob Agostini (Rai Thistlethwaite, Tim and Jean) at Soundbaker Studios in Perth.

Rich with soulful vocals, the record offers insight in to Shameem’s inspiring passion for life, positivity, spirituality and general desire to assist in the betterment of the world via song and goodwill.

It touches on a number of thought-provoking themes over the 15 tracks: the overcoming of prejudice, broken trust and forgiveness, thankfulness, and gratitude in the face of difficulties.
