Undertones – lyrics & inspiration

This is an old song that I wrote back in my high school days… it’s about the games of romantic hints that people play.

Lyrics:

My dear, when you come around
I see you’re dropping hints out on the floor
I hate it ’cause I want much more
But when it comes again
I’m feelin’ kinda awkward – it’s very scary
You’re getting much too friendly

Don’t you know you’re getting too close?
You’re freaking me out, ‘cause all it’s about is
All beneath the surface, you’re never too obvious
Yet all the while, down the mile, every time you smile

I get these undertones
The smile upon your lips is singing undertones
I’ve gotta get a grip upon my situation
‘cause whenever we’re together I get undertones
That don’t want to weather

My friend’s what you used to be
But now I really can’t tell anymore,
You’re close enough to score
And I love your company
Why couldn’t you just let things stay the same?
I’m not up for a change

(Pre-chorus)

(Chorus)

No, they don’t want to weather
And I think you’re thinking of love

Don’t you know you’re getting too close?
Yet all the while, down the mile, every time you smile

(Chorus x2)

No, they don’t want to weather
And I think you’re thinking of love
