Sound check at El Rocco, Sydney

Four days, four shows, four cities in four states. Sound like a mad mad mad mad schedule to you? It was! Let’s dispel the myth now: touring is not like going on a holiday where you happen to rock up to a club some evenings and play a show. It’s hard, grinding work… great fun, but tough!

“Have You Heard Shameem” – Drum Media (Sydney) article 24/07/12

Your music is…? Soul with a 90s sensibility, infused with jazz flavours and elements of 70s funk!

Which acts inspired you to produce your own music and why? Sting and Michael Jackson – what great songwriters!, Alicia Keys – ‘cause she plays piano and sings soul, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott – it’s R&B with a respectful nod to jazz, and way back in the day it was Jewel – a good poet and a real storyteller.

Projects, projects, projects…

BLOG ENTRY 15/11/10

So I’m in limbo right now… waiting to see if grants come through for WA tour (planned for February) and the songwriting trip to the UK (planned for May). Hate this waiting! I’ve decided that if I don’t get the funding for the WA tour, that I’ll cut the tour in half and make it a short one, mainly around the south-west of WA. But the UK trip… gee, I could really do with that funding!

I’ve never been one to dwell a lot on money, but unfortunately it’s the name of my game this year, if I want to do the things that I want to do! I’m now starting to brainstorm for a tour to Australia’s eastern states (think: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane)… and that I will DEFINITELY need funding for.

Song Summit and other antics…

BLOG ENTRY 28/06/10

Last weekend saw me flying the red-eye over to Sydney for Song Summit – a conference for songwriters organised by APRA (the Australiasian Performing Rights Association, of which I’m a proud member). If you know you’re only going to get 4-hours sleep on the plane as you’re total dose of shut-eye for the night, I highly recommend the measures that I took: clothe yourself like an eskimo, don a sleep mask and secure one of those awesome neck pillows… and then, when walking around groggily in your destination airport, head straight for Boost Juice.

After the red-eye, on the bus from airport to hotel room.
