Beat Magazine – Shameem

An interesting piece in Melbourne’s Beat Magazine; published in the lead up to my solo tour. The journalist, Thomas Brand, got pretty amped up and put a lot of his own political opinion into the article, hehe. I try to stay away from a partisan approach to politics and so I don’t necessarily share his views, but I really enjoyed the animated interview that we had, and his honest exploration of lyrics in pop music.

Shameem Taheri-Lee is described as a socially conscious musician. Considering the harsh impositions of the incumbent Liberal government, which has granted people the “right to be bigots” while perpetrating the forced closure of Aboriginal communities across Australia, it’s now more important than ever to speak out against social injustice. Taheri-Lee has been subjected to her fair share of discrimination, and writes from the heart in the hope that others will find something to relate to.

Touring Oz

Sound check at El Rocco, Sydney

Four days, four shows, four cities in four states. Sound like a mad mad mad mad schedule to you? It was! Let’s dispel the myth now: touring is not like going on a holiday where you happen to rock up to a club some evenings and play a show. It’s hard, grinding work… great fun, but tough!

“Shameem” – Beat Magazine (Melbourne) mention, 25/07/12

Soulful songstress Shameem, dubbed Australia’s answer to Alicia Keys and often compared to British chanteuse Sade, will be performing in Melbourne in July as part of her first national tour. This young Perth artist has been turning heads in the music industry following the release of her debut self-titled album. Her latest credits include performing support sets for Ronan Keating and Belinda Carlisle before audiences in the thousands, and being invited to Toronto to perform at NXNE Festival 2012. Catch her at Bar 303 on Sunday July 29. 9pm, $10.

“Q&A: Shameem” – Beat Magazine (Melbourne) article, 18/07/12

Define your genre in five words or less: Soul with a jazz tinge.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like? People have told me that I’m like a more jazzy/arty version of Alicia Keys or Sade.

What do you love about making music? Telling a story and taking people on a journey.

BLOG ENTRY 15/11/10

So I’m in limbo right now… waiting to see if grants come through for WA tour (planned for February) and the songwriting trip to the UK (planned for May). Hate this waiting! I’ve decided that if I don’t get the funding for the WA tour, that I’ll cut the tour in half and make it a short one, mainly around the south-west of WA. But the UK trip… gee, I could really do with that funding!

I’ve never been one to dwell a lot on money, but unfortunately it’s the name of my game this year, if I want to do the things that I want to do! I’m now starting to brainstorm for a tour to Australia’s eastern states (think: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane)… and that I will DEFINITELY need funding for.
