It’s not often that I am instantly a fan of a musician. I typically need a few songs to decide whether or not I like them, and if I decide that I do it is usually because they do something different, use elements that I like, or are inspired by something more than pop culture.

With the first note that Shameem sang, I was instantly a fan. Not only is her voice soft and sultry, but her lyrics are full of truths, experiences, and wisdom. She even shares her inspiration for her songs on her website, which I absolutely loved.

Touring North America – the food, friends and frenzy!

Tonee and I

Flight from Perth to Sydney: 4 hours. Sydney to LA: 14 hours. LA to Atlanta: 4 hours.

In Atlanta airport there is a baby grand piano in the food court of one of the terminals. The man at the piano is Tonee, who tinkles the ivories and croons the best of pop, soul and jazz tunes to the diverse people who pass through the food court. As I sat enjoying a smoothie, Tonee noticed me lip-syncing along to his music, and called me up to perform in his place. The crowd at Atlanta airport showed their appreciation of my covers of Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson with warm-hearted applause – it was a good start to the trip!

Exciting news: Ronan Keating and NXNE

It’s been a big week for Shameem! Just in the last several days she has had a couple of exciting invitations…

1) To support international pop crooner Ronan Keating in his Perth show, performing to an audience of 5000 people. Also gracing the stage will be Sharon Corr of The Corrs. Best known for his hit single “When You Say Nothing At All”, Ronan Keating has sold over 22 million albums worldwide. In Australia, he’s well known as a judge on The X Factor.

2) To perform at NXNE (North By Northeast) Music Festival & Industry Conference in Toronto in June. An annual 5-day event, NXNE is the most anticipated summer music event in Canada, and an international destination for unsigned bands, indie favorites, and major-label headlining artists alike, drawing 300,000 attendees.
