A huge 2015

It’s been a busy and exciting 2015 for Shameem. In the span of one year she has:

Released her sophomore album The Second City. The album and its singles (Beautiful Soul and Under One Sun) have garnered some great press coverage and reviews
Received airplay on over 80 Australian community/ ABC radio stations and 130 USA college radio stations, and charted in the Top 30 at 6 USA stations, including two Top 5 positions
Toured the Australian east coast twice – once with her band and once solo – each time performing 9 shows in 7 cities/ towns

Supported Michael Bolton at Perth Concert Hall, and supported Anthony Callea at The Quarry Amphitheatre
Performed in Toronto, including a showcase at Canadian Music Week
Sold out her show at the Perth International Jazz Festival
Been nominated for the (international) Independent Music Awards for “Under One Sun”, and placed 4^th in the Australian Songwriting Contest Contemporary Pop/ Dance category for “Beautiful Soul”

Shameem is currently back in Perth, focussing on writing some new material in her home studio. She will be announcing her next tours in early 2016.

Live footage from our performance at Canadian Music Week 2015; thank you so much Tony for the footage! This is us performing “Strawberry”; after the second chorus it’s a bit hard to see the band because everyone got up and danced in front of the camera, but I think that adds to the charm of this video. One thing I’ve learnt about Canadians is that they like to holler and egg you on during a scat solo, hehe…

Canada trip

I made the big trip over to the opposite side of the world aka the land of the maple leaf aka Canadia, to perform at Canadian Music Week music festival, and attend and do some networking at the Canadian Music Week music industry conference. While I was in Toronto I also did another little show and a house concert, did a couple of shoots for TV/ online media appearances, and even managed to sneak in some time to get to Niagara Falls for a day, before heading home via Hong Kong where I had a layover long enough to do some exploring and hang out with my Aunty for a bit.

Touring North America – the food, friends and frenzy!

Tonee and I

Flight from Perth to Sydney: 4 hours. Sydney to LA: 14 hours. LA to Atlanta: 4 hours.

In Atlanta airport there is a baby grand piano in the food court of one of the terminals. The man at the piano is Tonee, who tinkles the ivories and croons the best of pop, soul and jazz tunes to the diverse people who pass through the food court. As I sat enjoying a smoothie, Tonee noticed me lip-syncing along to his music, and called me up to perform in his place. The crowd at Atlanta airport showed their appreciation of my covers of Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson with warm-hearted applause – it was a good start to the trip!

This March Shameem is heading off across the Pacific Ocean for a whirlwind tour. Her trip includes performances at Canadian Music Week, as well as attending SXSW Music Conference and a number of side-shows and house concerts. For more details, see Shameem’s blog article.

So, in case you haven’t seen my ranting all over Facebook and twitter, I’m off to Canada and the USA this March – yay!!

What will I be doing? Here’s my itinerary:

12-17 March: attend SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas
19-24 March: attend and perform at Canadian Music Week, Toronto
24-27 March: house concerts and side-shows in Canada
28-31 March: house concerts and side-shows in the USA

Now in its 31st year, Canadian Music Week is recognized as one of the premier entertainment events in North America focusing on the business of music. It brings together Sound Recording, New Media and Broadcast for one spectacular week of events… Combining informative, intensive conferences, cutting edge trade exhibition, award shows, film festival and Canada’s biggest New Music Festival. Canadian Music Fest spans 6 nights of performances, with showcasing bands performing at more than 60 live music venues in downtown Toronto.
